Longhorn Attributes
When Cattlemen look at a breed, they check conformation, fertility, and how it will fit into their program, but thing they look long and hard at is how marketable the breed is. That’s one of the many advantages of the Texas Longhorn—marketability. Seedstock is the obvious reason for a registered herd, but there are many other outlets for the Texas Longhorn. There is the commercial bull and female market for many breeders. Roping stock is also an outlet that many are making work for them. Another is the breed’s uniqueness and history—"Horns and Hides", as auctioneer Eddie Wood often chants. This nostalgia is a marketing tool and the reason that many breeders first enter the business. Finally, the time is now for marketing lean beef, which Texas Longhorns produce naturally. Perhaps, this may be the biggest market yet for our breed. Seedstock: raised primarily for the "new breeder" and the existing breeder that wants to add some new genetics to his breeding program. The intellectual breeder only keeps his very best for this sole purpose. Commercial Females: when used with breed bull of choice they can produce high quality weanlings that are ready for market. Commercial Bulls: when placed on breed female of choice will cut costs of vet bills, as the females will calve easier. Roping Stock: the rodeos are good outlet for young longhorns, in roping, team penning, steer wrestling, and bucking events. History and Nostalgia: the magnificent trophy steers are always in demand for trail drives, exhibitions, celebrations, and people who want to own a piece of great American history. Lean Beef: with the public’s awareness and demand for lean, natural beef and the data coming in on the Texas Longhorn, is contributing to the success of Longhorn breeders all over North America. |
